Singer Sonu Nigam and popular esports player Tanmay Singh aka Scout have entered the world of esports by becoming team owners for Season 3 of the Global e-Cricket Premier League (GEPL).
Sonu Nigam will own the Kolkata Hawks, while Scout will own the Gujarat Wolves.
According to a press release from the esports tourney organising company JetSynthesys, the third season of GEPL will be held in Pune from August 1- 9. The tournament will feature eight teams and will be streamed on Star Sports and JioHotstar.
JetSynthesys, according to its website, is a pioneering operating platform in India’s Orange Economy. The company said it builds and scales IP-driven content and creator businesses led by video gaming, esports and entertainment, rooted in the digital culture. Nigam’s association with GEPL marks the league’s first ownership entry from the music industry. His addition, along with Scout’s presence, highlights the growing connection between entertainment, gaming and esports in India.
In May, while announcing the launch of S3 of GEPL, Rajan Navani, Chairman of JetSynthesys, said the company had “consistently pushed the boundaries” of what esports can be in India.
“With the scale of our reach, the depth of franchise investment and the growing aspirations of millions of esports athletes, we are building something truly generational,” he added.GEPL Season 3 will have a prize pool of Rs.3.1 crore and aims to provide a bigger platform for esports players. The previous season received over 174 million impressions, showing the growing popularity of e-cricket among Indian audiences.
