Filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj and Shaunak Sen have come together to support emerging independent filmmakers through a new co-production initiative aimed at nurturing fresh storytelling voices in Indian cinema. The initiative has been launched by Humans of Cinema in collaboration with Safarnaama Pictures and will provide financial and creative backing to promising filmmakers working on feature film projects.
According to a PTI report, the newly launched feature film co-production fund is valued at Rs 40 lakh and is designed to support one emerging filmmaker with a strong cinematic voice and a clear creative vision. Apart from financial assistance, the selected filmmaker will also receive mentorship from established names in the industry, helping independent creators navigate the challenges of filmmaking and production.
As part of the initiative, Vishal Bhardwaj and Shaunak Sen have joined as mentors, bringing with them years of experience across mainstream and independent cinema. Sen, whose internationally acclaimed documentary work has earned recognition at global film festivals, is also attached as an executive producer on one of the projects under the initiative.
The collaboration is being viewed as a significant step toward strengthening India’s independent film ecosystem at a time when young filmmakers are increasingly looking for alternative platforms and funding opportunities outside traditional studio systems. By combining financial support with mentorship, the initiative aims to create a more sustainable pathway for original and unconventional storytelling.
Vishal Bhardwaj is widely known for acclaimed films such as ‘Maqbool’, ‘Omkara’ and ‘Haider’, while Shaunak Sen gained international recognition for his documentary All That Breathes, which won awards at global festivals and received an Oscar nomination.
The move also reflects the growing focus within the Indian film industry on encouraging fresh talent and independent voices that can bring diverse narratives and new perspectives to audiences. With streaming platforms and international film festivals increasingly opening doors for Indian indie cinema, initiatives like this are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of filmmakers.
