Twitter has stated that phone verification is required to obtain a verified blue checkmark to prevent account impersonation.
On Sunday, Twitter posted a picture with the caption, “Blue subscribers with a verified phone number will receive a blue checkmark once approved.”
Later, Esther Crawford, product manager at Twitter, said that the micro-blogging platform added a review step before users are granted a blue checkmark, IANS reported from San Francisco.
Crawford stated, “As one of our new steps to combat impersonation (which is against the Twitter Rules), we’ve added a review step before applying a blue checkmark to an account.”
Several users commented on Crawford’s tweet, expressing their concerns about the new Blue subscription service changes.
Meanwhile, Twitter announced on December 12 that it would relaunch its Blue subscription service with verification, which would cost $8 for Android users and $11 for iPhone owners per month.
Musk increased the price of the Twitter Blue subscription service for iPhone users from $8 to $11 to keep the 30 percent cut that Apple takes on revenues from iOS apps on its App Store.
