CNN-News18 is set to bring the spotlight on Bengal’s rich cultural identity with its upcoming Kolkata Town Hall, scheduled for April 20, 2026. The special edition, themed ‘Bhalobasa Bengal – Inspiring Bharat’, aims to celebrate the state’s enduring influence across literature, art, music, cinema, and ideas that have shaped India’s creative and intellectual landscape.
According to a CNN-News18 press release, the Town Hall is designed as a tribute to Bengal’s legacy, focusing on the people and stories that continue to inspire the nation. The event reflects how the state’s cultural depth goes beyond regional boundaries, contributing significantly to India’s broader identity.
Adding a distinctive element to the event is its venue—a cruise on the iconic Hooghly River. The setting draws from Bengal’s historical evolution, symbolising its journey from a colonial crossroads to a hub of reform, art, and intellectual thought. This unique backdrop is expected to lend a deeper narrative to the conversations and discussions.
The speaker lineup brings together voices from across fields, blending culture, public life, and grassroots impact. Actor and former Rajya Sabha member Mithun Chakraborty and actress Sreenanda Shankar will share their perspectives on Bengal’s creative influence. They will be joined by trailblazers like Tanya Sanyal, the first woman firefighter in Indian aviation, Ipsita Chakraborty, Kolkata’s first woman bartender, and Reshma Nilofer Visalakshi, a Nari Shakti awardee and Marine Pilot, bringing stories of resilience and change.
Music will find representation through the celebrated duo Sourendro and Soumyojit, while public discourse will feature leaders such as Smriti Irani, Leander Paes, Saira Shah Halim, Keya Ghosh, and Rekha Patra, connecting governance with cultural identity and grassroots realities. Additional voices like Roopa Ganguly and Babul Supriyo will further bridge the worlds of art and public service.
Speaking on the initiative, Rahul Shivshankar, Editorial Affairs Director, CNN-News18, said the platform aims to celebrate voices that carry forward Bengal’s cultural and intellectual legacy. Smriti Mehra, CEO – English & Business News, Network18, added that the Town Hall reflects the network’s commitment to bringing stories of culture and people to the forefront, especially as Bengal approaches an important political phase.
The Kolkata Town Hall edition underscores a simple but powerful idea—Bengal continues to inspire. The event will be broadcast on CNN-News18 across television, connected TV, and YouTube on April 20, offering viewers a deep dive into conversations that celebrate the state’s spirit and its impact on the nation.
