The Government of India has constituted the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), a high-level inter-ministerial body aimed at shaping and coordinating the country’s approach to artificial intelligence governance, policy development and economic alignment.

According to a PIB release, the initiative by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) gives formal structure to recommendations outlined in India’s AI Governance Guidelines and the Economic Survey, both of which stressed the need for a unified, whole-of-government framework to manage the rapid growth of AI technologies.

The newly formed AIGEG will serve as the apex institutional mechanism within India’s AI governance framework, bringing together key ministries, regulators and stakeholders to ensure policy coherence. The group is expected to align AI deployment with broader economic priorities, particularly addressing labour market transitions and ensuring social stability as automation and AI adoption accelerate.

The body will be chaired by Ashwini Vaishnaw, who currently holds the portfolios of Electronics and Information Technology, Railways and Information & Broadcasting. Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Electronics & IT and Commerce & Industry, will serve as Vice Chairperson.

The AIGEG’s mandate includes coordinating policy across departments, tracking global developments in AI, and addressing emerging risks and regulatory challenges. It is also expected to play a crucial role in ensuring that India’s AI ecosystem evolves in a responsible and inclusive manner, balancing innovation with safeguards.

To support its functioning, a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) will be established, providing specialised inputs on technological advancements, governance frameworks, and international best practices. This advisory layer is expected to help the government remain responsive to the fast-evolving AI landscape.

The move signals a more structured and forward-looking approach to AI governance in India, at a time when the technology is increasingly influencing sectors ranging from healthcare and finance to manufacturing and public services. By institutionalising coordination at the highest level, the government aims to ensure that AI adoption is not only accelerated but also aligned with national priorities and long-term economic goals.
