The government has issued a notice to Telegram over reports of widespread piracy on the messaging platform, All India Radio reported today citing sources.
The notice directs Telegram to take immediate action against the circulation of pirated films, web series and OTT content being shared through channels and groups on the platform. The move comes amid growing concerns from content creators, broadcasters and streaming platforms regarding the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material online.
Sources said the government has sought details of the steps being taken by Telegram to curb copyright violations and prevent the dissemination of pirated content. The platform has also been asked to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 15 days.
Piracy continues to remain a major challenge for the media and entertainment industry, impacting revenues across theatrical releases, television broadcasters and OTT platforms. Industry stakeholders have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement measures against digital platforms that facilitate the illegal sharing of copyrighted content.
The latest notice signals increased scrutiny of online platforms as authorities seek stricter compliance with copyright regulations and stronger safeguards against content piracy.
Telegram had not publicly commented on the development at the time of writing.
