After four decades in the industry, Shekhar Suman is stepping into a new role—mentor to aspiring performers. The veteran actor, host, writer and director has announced the launch of the Shekhar Suman Film Academy (SSFA) in Mumbai, with the institute set to open its doors on April 22, 2026. Registrations for the inaugural batch are already underway, signalling a new chapter in Suman’s long association with the craft.
The academy positions itself as an alternative to formula-driven acting schools, with a strong emphasis on hands-on, immersive learning. At its core is an intensive three-month programme, personally designed by Suman, who is expected to be closely involved in conducting the sessions. The curriculum brings together key aspects of performance training, including voice and speech work, emotional development, body awareness and camera techniques. It also incorporates the Linklater Voice Method, alongside modules on film language and on-set discipline, culminating in a student film project that gives participants practical exposure to a working set.
Beyond the core course, SSFA will feature masterclasses led by actors, casting directors and filmmakers, creating a broader learning environment that blends theory with industry insight. The vision for the academy extends beyond acting alone, with plans to gradually expand into areas such as screenwriting, direction, cinematography, music production and post-production, building what is envisioned as a complete creative ecosystem.
Speaking about the initiative, Suman described the academy as a deeply personal endeavour. He noted that acting has shaped his understanding of discipline, imagination and resilience over the years, and said the aim is to create a space that goes beyond technical training to offer a meaningful creative journey for students.
The academy is backed by GBM Studios, with Dharmesh Sangani leading the initiative as founder and visionary. Adhyayan Suman joins as founder and director, bringing his experience across acting, music and direction, while Ekant Babani will oversee operations and strategy as partner and chief operating officer.
SSFA has kept its entry process accessible, requiring no prior training. Applicants will undergo a basic self-audition test, placing the focus on raw potential rather than polished experience. In an industry where acting institutes continue to grow alongside the boom in digital content, the academy’s biggest differentiator may well be Suman’s direct involvement in training. For aspiring actors looking to learn from someone who has spent decades in front of the camera, the opportunity is already open.
