Project Kuiper, Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network designed to provide fast, reliable internet to customers and communities beyond the reach of existing networks, has now been rebranded as Amazon Leo, according to the tech company.
In a note posted on its website late last week, Amazon said the work on a low earth orbit satellite constellation that powers its network was started under the code name ‘Project Kuiper’. “But (we) retired that name on November 13, 2025, and adopted Amazon Leo as our permanent identity,” the advisory stated, while going on to give the details of how’s and what’s about Amazon Leo.
To deliver on this mission, Amazon is deploying thousands of satellites linked to a global network of antennas, fiber and internet connection points on the ground, the company added.
Who will Amazon Leo help connect? There are billions of people on the planet who lack high-speed internet access, and millions of businesses, governments, and other organisations operating in places without reliable connectivity. Poor connectivity means limited access to modern communications. Amazon Leo is designed to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities beyond the reach of existing networks.
Amazon said it plans to deploy service to most countries around the globe, including hard to reach locations, starting later this year. Global rollout will speed up in 2026.
The tech company is one of the few companies that have applied to the Indian government to provide customers high-speed broadband over satellite. Elon Musk’s Starlink, Jio-SES combine and Airtel-backed OneWeb have already received government clearances, but are yet to start formal services. Starlink, reportedly, is undertaking some beta testing.
Amazon also clarified that Leo is not part of Blue Origin, a company founded by Amazon chief Jeff Bezos, which is primarily known for space tourism projects.
“Amazon Leo is an Amazon business, part of the same Devices and Services division responsible for Kindle, Echo, Fire TV, eero, Ring and other tech devices. Blue Origin is a separate company,” the note pointed out.
Amazon Leo is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, where primary research and developments are conducted. The project has three main parts: ground infrastructure, satellites and customer terminals.
Amazon Leo’s initial satellite constellation design includes more than 3,000 satellites. The term “constellation” refers to a group of similar satellites working together with tightly coordinated movements to achieve a common purpose — in this case, providing reliable broadband coverage.
