Netflix has set July 31 as the global streaming premiere of Korean retro K-pop comedy film ‘Wild Sing’, starring Gang Dong-won, with the title to be available in 32 subtitle languages and 15 dubbed languages.
The film, which arrives on the platform on July 30 in some territories, follows the reunion of a once-chart-topping co-ed dance group two decades after its sudden breakup, a Nteflix statement stated yesterday.
Directed by Son Jae-gon, ‘Wild Sing’ centres on Triangle, a three-member mixed-gender dance group that dominated the Korean music charts in the early 2000s before an overnight scandal brought its success to an abrupt end.
Twenty years later, leader Hyun-woo, played by Gang Dong-won, is pulled out of obscurity by an offer to reunite with his former bandmates — rapper Sang-gu (Um Tae-goo), who is struggling with debt after a failed solo career, and Do-mi (Park Ji-hyun), now living as the daughter-in-law of a chaebol family.
Netflix said the film generated strong anticipation in South Korea as the latest project headlined by Gang Dong-won. The cast also includes Oh Jung-se as Triangle’s longtime rival, the ‘Ballad Prince’ Choi Seong-gon.
The streamer highlighted the film’s blend of comedy, nostalgia and music, with Triangle’s fictional discography created by JYP Entertainment collaborators Shim Eun-ji, known for work with TWICE, SHINee, IU and ITZY and KASS, whose credits include NMIXX, GOT7 and ITZY. Choreography is by Yang Wook of Nana Company.
According to Netflix, the production also recreates the evolution of K-pop fashion across two eras, from bright first-album uniforms to metallic Y2K-inspired styling.
Ahead of the film’s release, the retro-style music video for Triangle’s debut single ‘Love is’ attracted more than 2.8 million views on YouTube, reflecting growing interest in the title.
Director Son Jae-gon said making comedy films helps him “view the world with a bit more ease” and expressed hope that audiences would have a similar experience watching ‘Wild Sing’.
“Wild characters go through wild struggles and sing wildly. I hope you enjoy watching ‘Wild Sing’ and laugh, then find yourself singing to yourself,” he said.
