Paramount Pictures has confirmed that the next instalment in the long-running ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise will release in theatres on May 21, 2027. The untitled project will mark the eighth entry in the popular horror series that has become one of the most profitable franchises in the genre.
According to a UNI report, the upcoming film is being produced by filmmaker James Wan and will be directed by Ian Tuason. While plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, the studio has indicated that the new chapter will continue to build on the franchise’s signature found-footage style that made it a global phenomenon.
The ‘Paranormal Activity’ series began in 2007 with Oren Peli’s ultra-low-budget original, which was famously made for just USD 15,000 and went on to earn USD 194.2 million worldwide. The film’s runaway success helped popularise the found-footage format in mainstream horror and established the franchise as a box-office force.
Jason Blum will produce the new film through the Blumhouse–Atomic Monster banner, alongside Wan, while franchise creator Oren Peli returns as a producer under Solana Films. Paramount Pictures is co-producing and co-financing the project, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The choice of a May release reflects the growing strength of the month for horror titles. In recent years, several genre films have found both critical and commercial success during this window, reinforcing studios’ confidence in positioning major horror releases outside the traditional autumn season.
Over the years, the ‘Paranormal Activity’ universe has expanded with sequels including ‘Paranormal Activity 2’ (2010), ‘Paranormal Activity 3’ (2011), ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ (2012), ‘The Marked Ones’ (2014), ‘The Ghost Dimension’ (2015), and ‘Next of Kin’ (2021). Collectively, the franchise has grossed over USD 900 million worldwide.
Speaking about the project, James Wan said he has long admired ‘Paranormal Activity’, particularly the original film’s slow-burn tension and its ability to make the unseen deeply unsettling. He added that he is excited to help expand the franchise’s legacy and shape the next evolution of the found-footage horror series.
