One of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films, ‘Lagaan’, is set to make a return to the big screen as it celebrates 25 years since its original release. The iconic period sports drama, starring Aamir Khan, will be re-released in cinemas across India on June 12.
Originally released on June 15, 2001, ‘Lagaan’ was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and went on to become one of the most acclaimed films in Indian cinema. The film earned international recognition after receiving a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards, making it one of the few Indian films to achieve the distinction.
Set during British colonial rule, ‘Lagaan’ tells the story of a group of villagers burdened by an oppressive tax, or “lagaan,” imposed by their colonial rulers. Faced with hardship, the villagers accept an unusual challenge — a high-stakes cricket match against the British officers. If they win, their taxes will be waived; if they lose, the burden will become even heavier.
The film featured an ensemble cast including Gracy Singh, Paul Blackthorne, Suhasini Mulay, and several notable supporting performers. Its music, composed by A. R. Rahman, remains among the most memorable soundtracks in Hindi cinema.
Over the years, ‘Lagaan’ has been praised for its storytelling, performances, music, and unique blend of sports, history, and drama. The film also played a significant role in popularising cricket-themed narratives in Indian cinema.
The 25th anniversary re-release offers both long-time fans and a new generation of moviegoers an opportunity to experience the epic saga on the big screen once again, nearly a quarter-century after it first captivated audiences worldwide.
