Former Network18 CEO Avinash Kaul has announced that he is working on a new book, offering a glimpse into his nearly three-decade-long journey in the Indian media industry. Sharing the update yesterday on LinkedIn ahead of his 53rd birthday, he wrote “a book is coming. My story. And yours, in every page,” hinting at a deeply personal and reflective narrative.
The announcement signals what could be a timely account of leadership and transformation, particularly as the media landscape continues to evolve rapidly. Kaul’s career spans 28 years, including a 16-year tenure as CEO, during which he oversaw one of India’s largest news networks, managing 20 channels across 16 languages with a reach of over 700 million viewers.
Beyond his executive role, Kaul has played a significant part in shaping industry frameworks. He has been associated with the Media Research Users Council, where he contributed to the Indian Readership Survey and the Broadcast Audience Research Council India, where he served on the Extended Technical Committee, helping define television ratings systems. He was also a management committee member at The Advertising Club, participating in key industry conversations around media and advertising.
While the book’s title and release timeline are yet to be revealed —- at least not done so yesterday —- its announcement comes at a moment when Indian media is navigating structural changes, from fragmenting audiences to the rise of connected television and the steady migration of advertising spends to digital platforms as regulatory framework evolves to keep pace with technology and subsequent challenges arising out of such advances like AI.
A first-hand account from someone who has operated at the centre of these transitions is expected to offer valuable insight. Kaul has indicated that the book will be written with honesty and gratitude, suggesting a narrative that goes beyond a conventional executive memoir.
If his career trajectory is any indication, the book is likely to provide a considered perspective on leadership, change, and the evolving dynamics of the media business.
