Filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, known for acclaimed films like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Swades’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’, has been appointed as the festival director for the 57th edition of the International Film Festival of India.

According to a PTI report, Gowariker will take over the role from noted filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who had led the 55th and 56th editions of the festival, held annually in Goa. The appointment marks a significant development for one of India’s most prominent film festivals.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting described Gowariker as an acclaimed filmmaker with a distinguished contribution to Indian cinema. His body of work, spanning both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, has consistently reflected scale, storytelling depth and cultural relevance.

The International Film Festival of India, one of Asia’s oldest and most prestigious film festivals, serves as a key platform for showcasing global cinema while also celebrating Indian filmmaking talent. With Gowariker at the helm, expectations are that the festival will continue to strengthen its global positioning while retaining its core focus on cinematic excellence.
