Live Times has issued an official statement after Member of Parliament Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, sent a legal notice to the channel’s News Director Deepak Chaurasia following an interview.
According to a Live Times press release yesterday, the interview focused on questions related to Pappu Yadav’s recent conduct in the Parliament complex and other issues that were already in the public domain.
The interview came after a widely discussed controversy in which the MP staged a protest inside the Parliament complex last week while making allegations related to offerings at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya.
In its statement, Live Times said it considers asking questions to elected representatives on matters of public interest to be an essential responsibility of journalism.
The channel said it views the legal notice as an attempt to intimidate the press but maintained that it will continue to report fairly, accurately and independently.
Dilip Singh, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Live Times, said journalism should focus on facts, accountability and public interest rather than sensationalism. He added that the organisation remains committed to editorial independence and responsible reporting.
Chaurasia also said the questions asked during the interview were based on information already available in the public domain. He stated that legal notices or attempts to discourage journalists would not prevent Live Times from asking fair questions and reporting facts in the public interest.
The channel reiterated that it will continue to uphold factual, independent and public-interest journalism while fulfilling its responsibility to keep citizens informed
