Even as films that released in July 2025 grossed Rs. 1,430 crore at the domestic box office, the cumulative box office for January-July releases in 2025 stands at Rs. 7,175 crore, which is 22 percent higher compared to the same period in 2024, an Ormax study has revealed.
According to ‘The India Box Office Report: July 2025’ by Ormax Media, the year has a good chance of grossing more than Rs. 12,000 crore, and is in the running to become the best-ever year at the Indian box office — a record currently held by 2023 (Rs. 12,226 crore).
‘Saiyaara’ emerged as the top film of the month, grossing Rs. 392 crore, followed by ‘Mahavatar Narsimha’, at Rs. 259 crore. After a relatively-muted June, the surge in July was driven primarily by these two titles, which together contributed over 45 percent of the month’s total gross box office, the Ormax study stated. ‘Saiyaara’, in July 2025, is the second-highest grossing film of the year so far, behind ‘Chhaava’. Out of the Rs. 259 crore earnings of ‘Mahavatar Narsimha’, the Hindi version contributed 75 percent of its total domestic earnings.

Hollywood continues its strong run in India, with three titles featuring in this month’s Top 10 list: ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, ‘Superman’ and ‘The Fantastic Four: The First Steps’.
Hindi dominated the list of highest-grossing films of 2025 so far, with five titles in the Top 10, not including the multi-lingual ‘Mahavatar Narsimha’.
For language share calculation, the language-wise box office of films releasing in multiple languages is assigned to the corresponding language. However, for Hollywood, the data for all languages is reported under the language head ‘Hollywood’.
The continued success of Hollywood films in July has boosted Hollywood’s share from 10 percent (Jan-Jun) to 12 percent (Jan-Jul), which is now at par with 2022, and higher than 2023 (9 percent) and 2024 (8 percent). Kannada language’s share also increased from under 1 percent in June to over 2 percent in July, driven by the success of horror-comedy ‘Su From So’, while the share of Malayalam titles has dropped from 10 percent in June to 8 percent in July.

How to read the numbers? Different language industries follow different reporting conventions (gross, nett or share). Ormax said it has used gross BO as the unified measure for this report. For films released in multiple languages, collections are added up across languages to arrive at the film’s gross BO at an all-India level.
