Production has officially begun on the upcoming Netflix series adaptation of ‘My Brilliant Career’, based on Miles Franklin’s iconic Australian novel.
The series, produced by Jungle Entertainment, is being filmed across picturesque South Australian locations and at Adelaide Studios, which have been transformed for the sweeping period drama.
According to an official press release from Netflix, the drama reimagines Franklin’s beloved 1901 novel for a modern audience, while preserving its enduring themes of ambition, independence, and identity. The series tells the story of Sybylla, a spirited young woman determined to take control of her life in a society that constantly seeks to dictate her path. The production, rich in both period authenticity and contemporary relevance, aims to introduce this literary classic to a global audience.
Leading the cast is Philippa Northeast (Territory, The Newsreader) in the role of Sybylla, supported by a strong ensemble that includes Christopher Chung as Harry, Anna Chancellor as Mrs Bossier, Genevieve O’Reilly as Helen, Kate Mulvany as Augusta, and Alexander England as Julius. Other notable names joining the cast are Jake Dunn, Sherry-Lee Watson, and Miah Madden.
The creative team behind the adaptation is led by executive producer and writer Liz Doran, known for her work on ‘Barons’ and ‘Please Like Me’. Joining her as executive producers are Chloe Rickard of Jungle Entertainment and director Alyssa McClelland. McClelland will also direct the first three episodes, while Anne Renton, also serving as co-producer, will direct episodes 4 to 6.
In her statement, Doran expressed her pride in working with an “incredible team of creatives” to breathe new life into Franklin’s “rollicking tale of a young woman’s quest to determine her own life.” Executive Producer Chloe Rickard described the project as a dream collaboration, praising the partnership with Netflix and the choice of Philippa Northeast as the “rebellious and witty” Sybylla.
Netflix Vice President of Content, APAC, Minyoung Kim, called My Brilliant Career “a timeless Australian story,” noting how its themes remain relevant today. She praised South Australia’s locations and commended the high level of talent involved in the production.
Kate Croser, CEO of the South Australian Film Corporation, welcomed Netflix and Jungle Entertainment back to Adelaide. “We’re proud to support this exciting new series, which highlights our world-class South Australian crew, our endlessly beautiful locations, and our thriving screen production capability,” she said. South Australian producer Paul Ranford leads the local crew, bringing with him a wealth of experience from earlier projects like Stateless and Territory.
The visual team includes Felicity Abbott as production designer, Kieran Fowler and Marden Dean as directors of photography, and Mariot Kerr as costume designer. Hair and makeup are led by Zeljka Stanin, while casting is handled by Nikki Barrett and Nathan Toth.
First published in 1901, ‘My Brilliant Career’ quickly struck a chord with young Australian women of the era, who saw in Sybylla’s journey a reflection of their own dreams for freedom and self-determination. With this new screen adaptation, Netflix and Jungle Entertainment aim to rekindle that spirit for a new generation of viewers across the world.
