On August 15, 2021, the world watched in disbelief as Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, collapsed into chaos following the hasty withdrawal of US troops — an event that shook global politics and left millions impacted.
That pivotal moment in recent history now comes to screen through ‘Kabul’, a gripping six-episode English-language series set to premiere on Lionsgate Play in India on June 20.
Set against the backdrop of one of the most traumatic evacuations of modern times, ‘Kabul’ captures the urgency, confusion and human toll of a city spiraling into the unknown. Created by Olivier Demangel, Thomas Finkielkraut and Joé Lavy, and directed by Kasia Adamik and Olga Chajdas, the show dramatizes the 15 most critical days of the Kabul crisis, when every minute meant the difference between life and death.
This high-stakes political drama unfolds through the eyes of diplomats, soldiers, aid workers and Afghan civilians — each with their own battle for survival. From frenzied embassy corridors to heart-wrenching family farewells at the airport, ‘Kabul’ does not flinch. Shot with cinematic urgency and stark realism, the series was filmed at Greece’s former Hellinikon airport, meticulously transformed to recreate the frenzied airstrip scenes of Kabul.
Boasting an international cast that includes Shervin Alenabi, Jonathan Zaccaï, Eric Dane, Jeanne Goursaud, Gianmarco Saurino, Vassilis Koukalani and Valentina Cervi, the show breathes authenticity and emotional gravity into every character. The series is not just a visual spectacle but an emotional journey through fear, desperation, and human resilience, the makers claim.
Thomas Finkielkraut, co-creator of ‘Kabul’, explained the urgency of narrating such a fresh chapter of world history. “It’s rare to have real-world events this recent turn into fiction. But that’s what fiction does best—it helps us feel what headlines can’t convey. We focused on an Afghan family’s exile to build empathy and awareness,” he added.
Director Kasia Adamik exclaimed, “This isn’t history—it’s contemporary. It just happened. We wanted to show what the news couldn’t: the silent, human stories that unfolded when the cameras stopped rolling. These moments linger behind every major headline.”
