In a strategic shift that’s caught fans by surprise, Prime Video has officially cancelled two spin-off series from its global spy thriller ‘Citadel’ franchise — the much-anticipated Indian chapter ‘Honey Bunny’ and the Italian-set ‘Diana’.

Both shows were in various stages of production and were meant to expand the ambitious global storytelling model pioneered by the original Citadel series, a PTI story from New Delhi stated quoting a Variety report.

‘Honey Bunny’, starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, had generated substantial buzz in India, marking a high-profile collaboration between Bollywood stars and an international streaming platform. Simultaneously, Diana, led by Italian actress Matilda De Angelis, was shaping up to be a strong European extension of the spy universe.

However, in a recent update reported by Variety, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that both series will no longer continue as standalone shows. Instead, their narratives and characters will now be integrated into the upcoming second season of ‘Citadel’, which stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden. The new season is currently in development and is slated to premiere in the second quarter of 2026.

Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, acknowledged the change in direction but reassured audiences that the best is yet to come. “While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, season two of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet,” he said.

The decision underscores a refined approach to the franchise’s expansion strategy, consolidating its international stories into a singular, high-impact narrative arc. For fans who were eagerly waiting to see Varun and Samantha step into the world of espionage, the news may come as a disappointment — but there’s a silver lining. Their characters may still appear in ‘Citadel’ S2, giving the actors a global platform within the core storyline.

As for ‘Citadel’ itself, the franchise continues to be a major bet for Prime Video. Developed by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO and helmed in its first season by David Weil, the show was positioned as a genre-defining, globe-trotting spy saga with interlinked stories unfolding in various countries. With this recalibration, all eyes now turn to 2026 — and what promises to be an explosive new chapter for ‘Citadel’.
