Stories from the Asia-Pacific region have emerged as a major driver of global viewing on Netflix, with titles from the region now accounting for more than half of the platform’s weekly Global Top 10 non-English title lists, up from about 30 percent in 2021, according to Netflix as it marked 10 years of storytelling across Asia-Pacific.
The streamer, in a celebratory note earlier this week, said viewing hours of APAC content on the platform have quadrupled since 2019.
In a statement titled ‘From Local Stories to Global Hits: Celebrating 10 Years of Asian Stories Without Borders’, Netflix said its global expansion since 2016 has been built on a strategy of being “deeply local”, working closely with creators and creative communities across the region to bring culturally rooted stories to worldwide audiences.
The company said it has collaborated with more than 300 production companies across Asia-Pacific since 2020. Between 2016 and 2025, Netflix productions were filmed at more than 650 locations across the region, generating opportunities for local talent, businesses and communities.
Highlighting the growing international appeal of Asian content, Netflix said Japanese anime is now watched by more than half of its members globally. It added that films from Thailand and Indonesia have topped the platform’s Global Top 10 non-English title rankings, while Chinese-language content has continued to gain momentum with titles such as ‘Pursuit of Jade’.
Netflix also pointed to the sustained global performance of Indian cinema, noting that Indian films have appeared in its Global Top 10 every week since the beginning of 2024, which it described as a reflection of the country’s creative excellence and strong filmmaking culture.
The company said the past decade had demonstrated the global appeal of locally rooted stories when backed by long-term investment and creative partnerships. Looking ahead, Netflix said the future of global entertainment would be increasingly shaped by writers, directors, crews and creative partners from across the Asia-Pacific region.
