The News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) today strongly condemned an attack on the offices of Monica Broadcasting, which owns and operates, Mahaa News, terming it “a direct assault” on journalistic freedom and integrity.
An unruly mob of over 40 people, allegedly affiliated to a regional political party, entered the office of Mahaa News in Hyderabad, at about 1.30 pm on June 28, a NBF statement said, adding that the mob threatened the staff, including camera crew, and tried to intimidate the employees.
The mob, according to the statement, also involved in physical assault, which left two staff grievously injured. The mob hurled stones at the office, smashing glass panels and damaging broadcasting equipment and facilities, including company vehicles used for reporting.
Mahaa News has been a consistent voice for principled journalism. Attempts to suppress independent editorial judgment through force or vandalism are not only illegal but a grave threat to democracy.
We urge the state government and law enforcement agencies to immediately investigate the incident, bring the perpetrators to justice, and ensure adequate protection for media professionals.
The NBF stands in full solidarity with Mahaa News and reiterates its commitment to defending the freedom of the press, which is the bedrock of a free and fair society.
