Kiran Rao’s acclaimed film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is set to make its mark on the international stage as India’s official submission for the Oscars 2025. The Film Federation of India announced this decision, with ‘Laapataa Ladies’ triumphing over 29 contenders, including ‘Animal’ and ‘Aattam’, in a selection process led by Jahnu Barua.
In an earlier interview with PTI, Kiran Rao expressed her lifelong dream of having one of her films considered for the prestigious Academy Awards. “My dream would be fulfilled if it was, if it would go (to Oscars). But it’s a process, and I’m hoping Laapataa Ladies will be considered. I’m sure the best film will go, whoever they choose in the scheme of things,” she shared.
‘Laapataa Ladies’ is a heartwarming tale set in rural India, revolving around two young brides who accidentally switch places. Produced by superstar Aamir Khan, the film marks the cinematic debut of actresses Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel.
It was screened at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and received rave reviews from critics for its engaging screenplay and the nuanced performances of its leads.
With its simple yet poignant story, Laapataa Ladies has captured the hearts of audiences, making it a worthy representative for India at the upcoming Oscars.
