The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting yesterday advised all private satellite television channels to display a disclaimer on the harmful effects of drug abuse, asking them to carry the specified message prominently while telecasting content related to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The advisory, issued yesterday, is aimed at ensuring that television content does not inadvertently normalise or glamourise drug use and that viewers are made aware of its harmful consequences.
The Ministry said the disclaimer is to be displayed in the manner specified in the advisory when programmes contain references or depictions involving narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The advisory comes with the ministry reiterating the need for broadcasters to exercise responsibility while carrying content relating to drugs and their use.
The MIB said the disclaimer should be displayed prominently so that it is clearly visible to viewers.
The ministry has asked private satellite TV channels to ensure compliance with the advisory.
The government has long required anti-tobacco and anti-alcohol messaging in audio-visual content.
Under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, and the rules framed under it, tobacco advertising was prohibited, while rules notified in 2004 also prescribed health warnings and other restrictions relating to tobacco products.
The rules have since been amended, including provisions governing health spots, disclaimers and warnings in films and television programmes depicting tobacco and alcohol use.
