From throwing punches to throwing down the gauntlet in court, Donnie Yen is back—this time in a gripping new avatar that swaps action-laden streets for a high-stakes legal battlefield. Known globally for his iconic roles in ‘Ip Man’, ‘Kill Zone’, and more recently ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, the action legend is all set to bring his flair to the courtroom drama genre with ‘The Prosecutor’, premiering exclusively on June 13 on Lionsgate Play.
Inspired by true events, ‘The Prosecutor’ follows the intense journey of a former cop-turned-prosecutor who puts everything on the line to seek justice for a young man wrongfully convicted in a drug case. The stakes are personal, the corruption is deep, and the system is flawed—but Donnie Yen’s character refuses to back down. The actor not only plays the lead but also takes the reins as producer, bringing a deeply involved and layered performance to the screen. According to a press note issued by Lionsgate, the film promises a thrilling mix of emotional drama, moral dilemmas, and Yen’s trademark action intensity.
Speaking about his multi-faceted role in the film, Yen shared, “This time I took the role of both producer and actor apart from acting in the movie, which is my usual position. I try to do as much of my own homework as possible, gathering the necessary information and researching the film’s subject matter and anything related to the profession involved.”
He added that as a director, he pays special attention to every detail—how scenes are shot, how the story unfolds, and how to make the narrative feel fresh and engaging. “At the same time, as a producer, I have to find the balance. I can’t spend five years filming. I have to consider the film company’s resources and find that balance,” he said, highlighting the tightrope he walks behind the camera.
Yen, a perfectionist known for pushing boundaries, also opened up about what keeps him going after decades in the industry. “Every director follows a process that ends with them conveying their own feelings in the dialogue. This is how you tell yourself every morning when you wake up that you want to do something meaningful,” he reflected. “After making action movies for so many years, I naturally hold myself to a certain standard. The market always hopes to see some new creativity and level of excitement in Donnie Yen’s movies. In this movie, there are four action scenes, each with a different style.”
With ‘The Prosecutor’, fans can expect the full Donnie Yen experience—power-packed action, emotional storytelling, and a gripping narrative grounded in reality. The film offers a fresh space for Yen to showcase his evolution as an actor, storyteller, and filmmaker, all while keeping the thrill alive.
