Zee Kannada is set to present the world television premiere of ‘Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1’ on January 24 at 7 pm, reinforcing the network’s focus on marquee regional cinema and event-driven programming. The telecast brings the much-anticipated prequel of the blockbuster ‘Kantara’ to television audiences, positioning it as a major festive offering for Kannada viewers.
According to a Times of India report, the historical action drama is set in 4th Century CE India and traces the origins of the mystical forest land of Kantara. The film explores the traditions, faith and folklore that shaped the region, blending large-scale visuals with deeply rooted cultural storytelling that has resonated strongly with audiences since its release.
A prequel to the 2022 hit ‘Kantara’, the film expands the universe by delving into the spiritual and historical foundations of the land. With its grand canvas, mythological undertones and emphasis on indigenous belief systems, ‘Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1’ has been widely regarded as a landmark in Indian cinema, celebrated for marrying folklore with cinematic spectacle.
The film features a strong ensemble cast led by Rishab Shetty, who delivers a powerful dual performance as Berme and Mayakara. Rukmini Vasanth plays Princess Kanakavathi, while Jayaram is seen as King Rajashekara, the father of Kulashekara and Kanakavathi. Gulshan Devaiah essays the role of King Kulashekara, and Pramod Shetty appears as Bhogendra, adding further depth to the narrative.
At the heart of the story is Berme, a fearless warrior and ancestor of Shiva, who rises against the oppressive Kadamba kingdom to protect his people and their sacred forest land. As dark forces close in, Berme invokes the ancient deities Panjurli and Guliga, setting in motion the origins of the Bhoota Kola tradition. The film unfolds as a sweeping saga of faith, sacrifice, inner conflict and the clash between divine forces and royal ambition.
With its television premiere, Zee Kannada aims to bring this epic chapter of Kannada cinema to a wider audience, offering viewers an immersive retelling of a story steeped in mythology, history and cultural identity.
