Apple Original Films’ new feature film ‘Being Heumann’ premiered as the opening night film at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada. The world premiere took place on September 10, 2026, with the cast and filmmakers attending the event.
According to an Apple TV press release yesterday,‘Being Heumann’ is directed by Academy Award winner Siân Heder. The film stars Ruth Madeley as Judy Heumann, along with Mark Ruffalo, Dylan O’Brien, Madeline Delp and other cast members.
The film is based on the real-life story of Judy Heumann, a leading disability rights activist. Set in 1977, the story follows Heumann and a group of activists who come together to fight for the rights of people with disabilities after their demands for action are ignored.
The group occupies a federal government building and refuses to leave until officials respond to their demands. The protest becomes the longest occupation of a federal building in American history. The film shows the activists’ fight for equal rights and better opportunities for people with disabilities.
‘Being Heumann’ focuses on the people who played an important role in the disability rights movement. It shows how a small group of activists came together to challenge the system and push for changes that could improve the lives of millions of people.
Sian Heder has directed and produced the film and co-written it with Rebekah Taussig. Heder is also known for directing ‘CODA’, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.‘Being Heumann’ will be released in select theatres on November 6, 2026. The film will then premiere globally on Apple TV on November 13, 2026.
