Lionsgate sells Lionsgate Play in India, Southeast Asia to founder Rohit Jain

Lionsgate has sold its streaming service Lionsgate Play in India and Southeast Asia to Rohit Jain, the executive who built and led the platform across the region over the past eight years. Jain, who served as President of Lionsgate Play Asia, will now take full ownership and management of the OTT service and will exit Lionsgate as part of the transaction.

According to a Deadline report, the sale applies only to the Lionsgate Play streaming business in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Lionsgate will continue to retain all of its other film and television operations in the region. Under a multi-year agreement, the studio will license the Lionsgate Play brand name to the platform and continue to supply its film and television library for streaming.

The move places Lionsgate Play under founder-led ownership with a sharp regional focus, at a time when Asia’s digital entertainment market is seeing rapid growth. Jain’s acquisition is expected to allow the platform greater flexibility to evolve its content strategy and product positioning for local audiences, while continuing to leverage Lionsgate’s Hollywood catalogue.

“We thank Rohit for his outstanding leadership in building and scaling Lionsgate’s business in India over the past eight years,” said Lionsgate COO Brian Goldsmith. He noted that under Jain’s stewardship, Lionsgate Play emerged as a distinctive premium streaming platform in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital entertainment markets. Goldsmith added that Jain’s entrepreneurial mindset and deep understanding of the Asian landscape position him well to lead the service into its next phase of growth.

Reflecting on the transition, Jain said he was grateful to Lionsgate leadership for the trust and autonomy he was given to build the company’s India business and expand Lionsgate Play across Asia. He said the platform has established itself as a key destination for Hollywood content in India and is now poised to grow beyond that, with the ambition of shaping a differentiated and future-ready streaming service for the region.

The transaction marks a strategic shift for Lionsgate Play, signalling a new chapter under independent ownership, while allowing Lionsgate to maintain its broader studio presence and content licensing footprint across India and Southeast Asia.
