Sony BBC Earth has announced Indian environmentalist and social activist Dharmesh Barai as its Earth Champion for the month of August 2025. The initiative “Earth Champions” is dedicated to recognizing individuals whose sustained efforts are creating a positive impact on the planet by driving awareness, conservation, and sustainable practices.
According to a press release, Dharmesh Barai has been honored for his remarkable work in the conservation of flamingos and other migratory birds in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. Over the years, Barai has mobilized more than 90,000 volunteers, spearheading large-scale environmental drives across coastal and natural ecosystems. His weekend clean-up campaigns, which have been running consecutively for over 150 weeks, focus on reviving the mangrove habitats of Navi Mumbai — vital feeding and roosting grounds for migratory birds. These drives have resulted in the removal of over 700 tons of plastic and non-biodegradable waste, including medical refuse, from the fragile ecosystem.
Barai’s work goes beyond clean-up drives. He has launched the “Plastic-Free Sahyadri” initiative to tackle plastic waste along Maharashtra’s trekking routes and continues to raise awareness on the impact of pollution on marine biodiversity. His sustained efforts have brought attention to the ecological importance of mangroves and the threats posed by rapid urban development.
Over the years, he has been recognised with several awards, including ‘Green Crusader of the Year’, the ‘Sanctuary Wildlife Award’, the ‘Abhyaranay Vanajeev Award’, the ‘Water Heroes Award’, and the ‘Global Cleanup Heroes Award’.
Rohan Jain, Business Operations Head – Sony AATH and Cluster Head – Marketing, Movies, Infotainment, Regional and Sony PAL • Channel PIX, Sony BBC Earth, said that Barai’s commitment to the environment aligned seamlessly with the channel’s values. “Dharmesh Barai’s dedication to environmental causes and his innovative use of cleanup drives align perfectly with Sony BBC Earth’s commitment to promoting sustainability. His tireless efforts to create a better world for Flamingo birds have inspired countless people. We hope that his story will motivate others to contribute to a greener future,” he noted.
Expressing his gratitude, Dharmesh Barai said being recognized by Sony BBC Earth felt like a dream come true. “I am truly happy and excited to be chosen as a BBC Earth Champion. It’s an honour to have my efforts recognized and presented on such a prestigious global platform. I’ve always watched BBC Earth on television, and now being featured on it feels like a dream come true. What makes this even more special is that BBC Earth is highlighting the work of grassroots changemakers like us, bringing local efforts to a global audience. This is not just encouraging, but deeply commendable. I sincerely appreciate the entire team for their vision and commitment,” he said.
