This Father’s Day, Ultra Play, India’s only dedicated Hindi OTT platform, is paying tribute to the spirit of fatherhood with a special curation titled ‘Bollywood Ke Baap’.
The month-long celebration will showcase a heartfelt journey through Hindi cinema’s portrayal of fathers — from stoic patriarchs to emotionally vulnerable dads who became symbols of strength and sacrifice in Indian households.
As per a press release by Ultra Play, the collection explores the evolution of fatherhood on screen, tracing decades of storytelling that shaped public imagination. In early Bollywood, father figures were often cast as strict, dutiful heads of families — silently bearing burdens with unwavering moral clarity. These roles laid the foundation for how generations perceived paternal love: strong, steady, and unspoken.
The curated titles reveal how Hindi cinema gradually peeled back emotional layers, portraying fathers not only as providers but also as nurturers — complex, imperfect, and deeply human.
The journey begins with Mehmood’s ‘Kunwara Baap’ (1974), a moving narrative of a single father navigating parenthood with compassion and humour. In ‘Shakti’ (1982), Dilip Kumar delivers an unforgettable performance as a conflicted father torn between duty and emotional longing. ‘Hatya’ (1988) and ‘Swarg’ (1990) broaden the scope of fatherhood beyond biology, revealing how love and responsibility define family.
Comedy classics like ‘Baap Numberi’, ‘Beta Dus Numberi’ (1990) lighten the mood, blending generational humour with the eccentric brilliance of Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor. Moving into the 2000s, films like ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ (2003) and ‘Iqbal’ (2005) underscore the emotional depth of paternal relationships, while ‘Waqt: The Race Against Time’ (2005) explores sacrifice and the bittersweet tensions between tradition and change.
A standout among the collection is ‘3 Idiots’ (2009), which tackles parental pressure with sensitivity, illustrating how unspoken love often hides behind stern expectations. ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’ (2012), featuring Sharman Joshi, pays an earnest tribute to every father willing to go the extra mile to make their child’s dreams a reality.
Completing the tribute is the evergreen superhero series ‘Shaktimaan’, now streaming on Ultra Play. Beyond its action and nostalgia, the show reflects the guiding strength and moral compass that fathers often represent in our lives — unwavering in their support and silent in their sacrifices.
Ultra Play, a venture by Ultra Media & Entertainment, offers a treasure trove of over 2,000 Hindi titles ranging from classics of the 1950s to contemporary hits.
