Netflix’s new limited series ‘BELOW’ has recorded the most-viewed debut for a Canadian title on the streaming platform. The series ranked first on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list with 17 million views. It also reached No. 1 in 53 countries and entered the Top 10 in 90 countries.
According to a Netflix announcement yesterday, the series is set in a small coastal town in Newfoundland and Labrador, where a mysterious sea creature threatens the community. The story follows a fisherman who fights to protect his family, community and traditional way of life.
Created by Canadian writer Jesse McKeown, ‘BELOW’ was filmed over 75 days at locations across Newfoundland and Labrador, including St. John’s, Brigus South and Pouch Cove. The series had its global premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.
The production also contributed to the local economy. It employed more than 700 main cast and crew members, along with over 425 daily hires and extras. Netflix said the production worked with more than 650 vendors and contributed over CAD 90 million (more than USD 65 million) to Canada’s economy, with most of the economic impact benefiting Newfoundland and Labrador.
Local culture also played an important role in the series. Traditional fishing skills, handmade wool clothing and music from local artists helped bring the region’s heritage to the screen. The production also consulted marine biologist Dr. Annie Mercier to develop the mysterious sea creature, which was created using visual effects by Toronto-based studio Mr. X.
