In a significant legal development, the Madras High Court has raised concerns over the unbridled activities of YouTube channels, advocating for stringent regulation in light of recent controversies.
The court’s remarks came during a hearing on an anticipatory bail plea filed by YouTuber Felix Gerald, who faced legal repercussions over objectionable content broadcast on his channel, The Economic Times reported.
The case revolves around an interview conducted by Felix Gerald featuring Savukku Shankar, during which derogatory remarks targeting women police personnel in Tamil Nadu were made. The contentious statements ignited widespread outrage and led to legal action against both Shankar and Gerald, prompting the Madras High Court to intervene.
During the hearing, Justice K Kumaresh Babu expressed dismay over the role of YouTube channels in disseminating harmful content, labeling them as a “nuisance to society.” The judge emphasized the urgent need for state intervention to regulate such platforms and uphold ethical standards in digital media.
Of particular concern to the court was the responsibility of the interviewer, Felix Gerald, in facilitating the controversial remarks made by Savukku Shankar. Justice Kumaresh Babu questioned the legitimacy of the interview and suggested that Gerald should bear equal accountability for the objectionable content aired on his channel.
The legal proceedings shed light on the broader societal implications of unregulated online content, with the additional public prosecutor highlighting the detrimental impact of the interview on the morale of the state police force. Despite summons being issued, Felix Gerald reportedly failed to cooperate with the investigating authorities, further exacerbating the situation.
In response to the unfolding controversy, the Madras High Court directed the Coimbatore police to file their response within a week, signaling a proactive stance in addressing the issue of unregulated YouTube channels.
The court’s intervention underscores the pressing need for regulatory measures to safeguard against the dissemination of harmful content and uphold the principles of responsible journalism in the digital age.
As the case progresses, it serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by unregulated online platforms and the imperative for concerted action to protect societal values and integrity in media dissemination.
