In a significant crackdown on digital piracy, the Cyber Crime Police in Kolkata have taken down an illegal streaming application identified as ‘Vedu’, following a complaint by JioStar. The app was allegedly involved in the unauthorised distribution of copyrighted content, including films, web series, and live sports broadcasts.
According to a JioStar press note, the action was initiated after an FIR was registered at the Cyber Police Station in Kolkata. Investigations revealed that the accused had developed and operated the “Vedu” application to host and stream video-on-demand content and live sports without authorisation, including content linked to JioStar’s platforms.
During the raid, authorities seized key digital infrastructure used to run the piracy operation. This included a laptop, two mobile phones, and networking equipment such as a router and modem, indicating a structured technical setup behind the illegal streaming service. Officials said the app had built a monetisation layer through in-app advertising networks, generating revenue while distributing pirated content.
Following the enforcement action, the ‘Vedu’ app has been rendered non-functional and is currently offline, effectively cutting off user access. The case has been registered under provisions of the Copyright Act, 1957, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, with further investigation underway.
The development highlights the growing focus on tackling app-based piracy ecosystems, where illegal platforms continue to exploit digital distribution channels. It also reflects increasing coordination between content owners and law enforcement agencies to curb unauthorised streaming and protect premium digital content in an evolving media landscape.
