Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated political drama ‘Emergency’ is set to stream on Netflix starting March 17, 2025. Directed, produced, and headlined by Ranaut herself, the film dives deep into one of India’s most controversial political eras the Emergency period declared between 1975 and 1977.

Kangana portrays India’s first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, in a bold and intense avatar, exploring the decisions, power dynamics, and political turmoil of the era, PTI reported from New Delhi.

Sharing the news on social media, Kangana wrote, “The moment I’ve been waiting for! Emergency is coming to Netflix on March 17. Can’t wait for audiences to experience this chapter of India’s history through my lens.”

‘Emergency’ highlights the complexities of Indira Gandhi’s leadership during the 21-month period when civil liberties were suspended, press freedom was curbed, and thousands of political opponents were jailed. The film doesn’t shy away from depicting the controversies and personal struggles Gandhi faced, offering both a political and emotional narrative.

The film also features a stellar ensemble cast Anupam Kher as revolutionary leader Jayaprakash Narayan; Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee; Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw; Mahima Chaudhry as journalist Pupul Jayakar, and Satish Kaushik in one of his final film roles.

‘Emergency’ marks Kangana’s return to the director’s chair after ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’. Talking about the film, she previously stated, “Emergency isn’t just a political drama—it’s a deep dive into power, its consequences, and the price one pays for it. Playing Indira Gandhi was an intense, transformative experience.”

With its blend of historical fact and personal storytelling, Emergency aims to offer a thought-provoking look at a period that shaped modern India.
