The reboot of the popular sitcom ‘A Different World’ has been renewed for a second season, bringing the new generation of students at the fictional HBCU Hillman College back for another chapter.
The comedy series follows Deborah, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she navigates college life alongside a new generation of Hillman students.
According to a ANI report, Season 2 will pick up after a transformative summer, with Deborah and her classmates returning to campus for their sophomore year with a “New Year, New Me” attitude. However, their fresh start will soon be complicated by past decisions, uncertain futures, new relationships and friendships, as well as deeper questions about their purpose.
The Season 2 logline reads: “After transformative summers, Deborah and her Hillman classmates return to campus for sophomore year with a ‘New Year, New Me’ attitude, only to find themselves faced with past decisions, uncertain futures, new loves and friendships, and deeper questions of purpose… all while, of course, getting themselves into a whole lot of new mess,” reported Variety.
The reboot stars Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche, alongside Moon. Original series stars Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison have reprised their roles as Whitley and Dwayne, respectively. The returning cast also includes Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Ajai Sanders and Jada Pinkett Smith, among others.
Felicia Pride serves as the creator, showrunner, executive producer and writer of the series. Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original sitcom, has also returned as a director and executive producer.
Reacting to the renewal, Pride said the response from the audience had been validating and expressed excitement about returning to Hillman to continue telling meaningful stories that connect with audiences across generations.
“It’s so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience. We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. I am thrilled for our brilliant cast and our hard-working crew,” Pride said in a statement, as quoted by ANI.
Allen also celebrated the renewal, thanking audiences and Netflix for bringing the show back for another season. She highlighted the original series’ focus on joy, romance, relevance, authenticity and heartfelt storytelling, while noting its strong performance among Netflix audiences.
The original ‘A Different World’ ran from 1987 to 1993 and followed students at Hillman College. The reboot continues that setting with a younger generation while bringing back several familiar faces from the original series.
With Season 2 now confirmed, the series will continue exploring college life, relationships, friendship and questions of identity and purpose through the experiences of Deborah and her Hillman classmates.
