Puneet Goenka, Gaurav Banerjee and Rahul Kanwal shared their views on the current TV ratings system and the need for regulations to keep pace with the changing media landscape at FICCI Frames 2026.
Puneet Goenka said regulations need to evolve along with the industry. He noted that issues related to ratings, pricing and other aspects of the broadcasting sector need to be considered together as the industry continues to change.
Gaurav Banerjee also highlighted the importance of having a reliable and common ratings system for the television industry. He said ratings play an important role for broadcasters and advertisers by providing a common basis to understand television viewership.
Rahul Kanwal said the existing ratings system worked for a period of time but may now need an upgrade. He noted that the industry has several issues with the current ratings ecosystem and needs to think about how the system can be improved.

The speakers also highlighted the importance of ratings as a common currency for advertisers and broadcasters. Without a neutral measurement system, it becomes difficult to understand which content is being watched, who is watching it and to what extent.
They also discussed the impact of the absence of TV ratings on the television advertising market. The lack of ratings is accelerating the movement of advertising money from linear television towards digital platforms, a shift that was already taking place.
The discussion at FICCI Frames 2026 underlined the need for the television industry to bring back a common and reliable ratings system. The speakers also pointed to the need for the industry and regulators to keep evolving the system as the media landscape changes.
