Zee has completed 34 years of operations, with Group founder Dr. Subhash Chandra marking the milestone by reflecting on the broadcaster’s journey, its early challenges and its contribution to the growth of India’s media and entertainment industry.
Chandra recalled that Zee’s journey began with a team of just five people and a clear vision of creating entertainment that was made by Indians for Indian audiences. From that small beginning, the company went on to become part of the growth of private television broadcasting in India.
In a social media post marking the anniversary, Chandra looked back at the journey and said the milestone was not an individual achievement but the result of the contribution of the people associated with the network over the years.
“34 years… It feels like a lifetime, yet feels like yesterday,” Chandra wrote. Recalling the early days, he said, “When we turned the switch on, there were just five of us in the room. The odds were stacked, the challenges were immense, but the dream was clear: to give India entertainment crafted by Indians, for Indians.”
According to Chandra, Zee’s growth helped unlock what he described as a broadcasting revolution in India, creating opportunities, careers and livelihoods for more than 30 million people across the media and entertainment value chain.
He also acknowledged the contribution of technicians, artists, team members and viewers who have been part of Zee’s 34-year journey. Chandra said the milestone belonged to everyone who helped make Zee a part of their lives.
“From 5 people taking a leap of faith to touching 30 million lives: this milestone doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to every technician, artist, teammate, and viewer who made Zee a part of their family,” he said.
The founder also reflected on the network’s role in the evolution of Indian broadcasting, with Zee’s launch coming at a time when private television was beginning to reshape the country’s media landscape. Over the years, the broadcaster expanded its presence across television and the wider entertainment ecosystem.
While reflecting on the legacy built over more than three decades, Chandra said the focus now remains on the future and on exploring the potential of Indian innovation in shaping the next phase of entertainment.
“While the past three decades built a legacy, our eyes are set firmly on the future, ready to reimagine what Indian innovation can do for tomorrow,” he said.
The 34-year milestone thus marks both a look back at Zee’s beginnings with a five-member team and a renewed focus on the changing Indian media and entertainment landscape.
