The Delhi High Court yesterday asked the Centre and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to examine concerns raised over the upcoming film ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, starring Ranveer Singh, for allegedly revealing tactical and sensitive details related to India’s intelligence and defence operations.
According to a PTI report, a bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia directed the authorities to treat the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an SSB personnel (a para-military outfit) as a formal representation and take an informed decision on the matter. The petitioner had raised objections claiming that certain portions of the film could potentially disclose operational methods and sensitive information linked to national security.
During the hearing, the court observed that while films are primarily made for entertainment, their wider impact on society and public perception cannot be ignored. The bench also remarked that the concerns highlighted in the plea did not appear to be entirely baseless.
“The Censor Board should have some guidelines. We want you to consider this representation and take an informed decision,” the court orally stated while addressing the matter.
The PIL sought intervention before the film’s release, arguing that showcasing tactical procedures or intelligence-related details on screen could have unintended consequences. The petitioner reportedly requested authorities to carefully review the content to ensure that no classified or sensitive operational information is disclosed publicly.
‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ has already generated strong buzz due to its action-heavy narrative and Ranveer Singh’s intense role. However, the controversy surrounding the film has now added another layer of attention ahead of its release.
The Centre and the CBFC are yet to publicly respond to the court’s observations.
