Direct-to-home operator Dish TV India Limited has disclosed a fresh licence fee demand of Rs.7,203 crore raised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), intensifying the long-standing regulatory overhang hanging over the company’s DTH business.
The disclosure was made as part of the company’s statutory filings on Feb 06, where Dish TV said the demand pertains to licence fees and is part of an ongoing dispute with the government. The matter, the company clarified, is sub judice and continues to be contested through legal channels.
According to Dish TV, the claim relates to differences in the interpretation of licence fee calculations under the DTH policy framework. The broadcaster has maintained that the demand is not tenable and has been challenged before the appropriate judicial forums. As a result, no provision has been made for the amount in the company’s financial statements at this stage.
The fresh claim adds to the regulatory challenges faced by the DTH sector, which has been grappling with shrinking subscriber bases, intense competition from OTT platforms and rising compliance costs. For Dish TV, the development comes at a time when the company is already navigating operational headwinds and balance sheet stress.
Industry observers note that large retrospective demands such as this continue to weigh on investor sentiment across the broadcasting and distribution space. The prolonged nature of such disputes also creates uncertainty around future liabilities, making it difficult for companies to plan long-term capital allocation and growth strategies.
Dish TV said it remains confident of its legal position and is pursuing all remedies available under law. The company reiterated that the outcome of the case will depend on judicial proceedings and any future directions from the authorities, keeping the issue firmly in focus as a key regulatory risk for the sector.
