Puthiya Thalaimurai, the independent Tamil news channel, has faced an unexplained blackout on the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV) network, sparking concerns among viewers and media professionals over potential interference in free press operations.
According to a press release issued by the channel, the disruption began last Friday, with viewers across the state reporting that the channel, normally available on Channel 44, was no longer visible. Despite repeated attempts by the channel’s technical and administrative teams to seek clarification from TACTV officials on October 3, 4, 5, and 6, no response or explanation has been provided. The sustained silence from the government-operated network has raised serious questions about the neutrality and responsibilities of state-owned cable services.
Puthiya Thalaimurai has long been recognized for its independent, fact-based journalism, serving as a platform for diverse voices and highlighting issues of public interest. The abrupt removal of its telecast has ignited calls for immediate action, with demands for both the Government of Tamil Nadu and TACTV to clarify whether the blackout was a result of any directive or technical intervention, and to restore the broadcast without delay.
The channel emphasized that freedom of the press is not merely a privilege but a constitutional right and a cornerstone of democracy. Any disruption, deliberate or otherwise, that obstructs this right undermines public trust and the principle of equitable access to information. Regulatory and industry bodies have also been urged to take note and ensure that public cable networks maintain fair and non-discriminatory service to all licensed channels.
As viewers await a resolution, the incident has spotlighted the critical importance of transparency and accountability in government-operated media distribution systems, reinforcing broader concerns about safeguarding independent journalism in India.
