Zee News, one of India’s most trusted news networks, has taken a pioneering step in the fight against misinformation by launching the country’s first AI-powered deepfake verification system. The initiative, developed in collaboration with Neural Defend, brings advanced verification technology directly to citizens, allowing them to authenticate videos, images and audio clips in real time.
According to a press release issued by Zee News, the launch reinforces the network’s longstanding commitment to credibility and innovation, while also positioning it as a global leader in responsible, AI-driven journalism. Deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation have emerged as one of the most urgent challenges to democracy and the media, with research suggesting that over 96 per cent of manipulated videos often go undetected by the average viewer. This, the network noted, erodes trust in institutions and weakens the democratic framework.
The newly launched verification platform provides a simple drag-and-drop interface for users. Citizens can upload any suspicious video, image or audio file, and within seconds the AI engine analyses the content to confirm whether it is authentic or artificially manipulated. The system was unveiled during a Zee News prime-time telecast, where Managing Editor Rahul Sinha explained how viewers can now use this feature to check questionable material instantly.
Commenting on the initiative, Anindya Khare, Marketing Head, Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL), said, “In today’s fast-evolving media landscape, trust is the new benchmark. With our deepfake verification initiative, Zee News is empowering audiences across generations to separate fact from fiction in an age where misinformation spreads fast. While Gen Z and younger viewers are particularly vulnerable to fake content, this system ensures a credible space for everyone. For advertisers and partners, it also creates the most reliable environment to engage with audiences—where advanced technology and authenticity come together.”
On the technology front, Vijayant Kumar, Chief Technology Officer, ZMCL, underlined the ease and efficiency of the platform. “Our goal was to ensure deepfake detection is fast, accurate and simple for every citizen. By integrating Neural Defend’s advanced AI with Zee News’ platforms, we’ve created a solution that can detect even the most sophisticated manipulations within seconds. This is not only an innovation for today but also a safeguard for the information ecosystem of tomorrow,” he said.
Zee News added that the initiative is not limited to protecting citizens but also strengthens the broadcaster’s leadership in the industry. By integrating deepfake detection across television, web and digital platforms, the system enhances viewer confidence, builds deeper engagement and provides advertisers with a secure, brand-safe environment. Industry experts see this step as setting a new benchmark for technology-first newsrooms in India.
