Celebrated filmmaker Ram Madhvani, the creative force behind Neerja and Aarya, has announced his most ambitious storytelling venture yet — India’s first immersive mythological and spiritual virtual reality (VR) universe. The project, developed by Equinox Virtual, seeks to blend AI-driven technology with India’s rich cultural heritage, starting with a virtual adaptation of the ‘Bhagavad Gita’.
According to a press release, the first short film — which has already begun private previews — is a cutting-edge AI-powered rendering of the ‘Gita’, designed for deeply personal and immersive VR viewing. Crafted over two years, it marks the beginning of a large-scale, long-term vision to build India’s biggest AI-driven spiritual and cultural content universe.
“With VR, especially powered by AI, we have a chance to restore the sanctity of immersive storytelling—even in a solitary experience,” said Madhvani, Co-founder of Equinox Virtual. “And what better canvas than our own epics that have lived through centuries—spiritual texts that remain culturally resonant to this day?”
The filmmaker’s pivot from traditional and OTT platforms to an emerging medium like VR comes with a clear conviction — that content must lead technological innovation. “Devices will improve. But the real challenge, and opportunity, is in the story, and the soul,” he explained.
The venture is already looking to scale up. With 24 more films currently in development and 100 planned by 2028, Equinox Virtual aims to create a robust catalogue of immersive spiritual content rooted in Indian mythology, devotional themes, and cultural traditions. Future projects are also expected to be powered by AI tools to enhance visual fidelity, interactivity, and emotional engagement.
Amita Madhvani, Co-founder of Equinox Virtual, said the goal was not just technological novelty but spiritual sincerity. “It’s not just about innovation, it’s about devotion—reimagined for a generation ready to feel, not just watch,” she noted. “We want to create an experience where mythology, meaning, and modern storytelling come together in a sacred, immersive space.”
While the industry often debates over the future of VR headsets and wearable tech, Madhvani’s focus remains on content and emotional depth. “At Equinox, we’ve always believed that technology should serve emotion, not overshadow it,” he said.
Discussions are currently underway with device manufacturers for strategic partnerships, and the venture has already attracted early investor interest. However, Madhvani stated he prioritized artistic integrity before commercial rollout. “I wanted to ensure the first film matched my creative vision before inviting partners into this journey.”
The announcement marks a significant milestone not only for Ram Madhvani Films but also for India’s emerging intersection of cinema, culture, and immersive tech. A Cannes Lions-winning ad filmmaker and National Award winner, Madhvani’s entry into the AI-VR space may well set the tone for the future of Indian storytelling.
