Netflix’s latest Thai drama ‘Mad Unicorn’ is galloping ahead of the competition — after premiering on May 29, the series shot straight to the #1 spot in Thailand within a day and, in just a week, climbed to #4 globally on Netflix’s Top 10 Non-English TV shows chart.
A thrilling dramatization inspired by the rise of Thailand’s first unicorn startup in the express delivery business, ‘Mad Unicorn’ tells the gripping story of Thunder Express, a small yet defiant company going head-to-head with corporate behemoths. The high-octane startup tale is brought to life by director Nottapon Boonprakob, known for his nuanced storytelling and visual flair, it’s a media statement from Netflix.
At the heart of the storm is Natara Nopparatayapon, playing Santi Saelee, the driven and idealistic founder of Thunder Express. While Natara has long been a household name, critics and audiences alike are calling this his most demanding and transformative role to date.
The actor’s preparation was nothing short of intense. One of the series’ most talked-about scenes involves a monologue entirely in Mandarin — the longest of his career — for which Natara had just two months to prepare. Guided by Mandarin coach Chanintorn Pitakwarakorn, he worked tirelessly to deliver not just accurate pronunciation, but emotional authenticity. According to the director, Natara “never missed a line,” a testament to the actor’s precision and passion.
“I wanted viewers to truly believe in Santi,” Natara said in an interview. “I needed to understand his origins and what drove him.” His transformation wasn’t limited to language — he physically altered his appearance, travelled to Doi Wawee in northern Thailand to immerse himself in the local way of life, and even trained in motorcycle stunts to pitch a now-iconic wheelie scene that was eventually added to the show.
Director Nottapon credits much of the show’s immersion to the exceptional production design, which recreated the gritty energy of Thailand’s tech startup scene. “It elevated the entire series beyond the script,” he said. “Everyone — from actors to crew — felt like we were inside the world we created.”
With its electrifying performances, razor-sharp storytelling, and real-life inspiration, Mad Unicorn is more than just a series — it’s a battle cry for dreamers and doers alike. As it continues its global climb, one thing is clear: this Thai underdog story is anything but small.
