Prime Video has unveiled the first teaser trailer and release date for its upcoming historical drama series ‘Bloodaxe’. Created by Michael Hirst, known for ‘Vikings’, the series follows the rise of Viking warrior Erik Bloodaxe and his wife Gunnhild as they fight for the throne of Norway.

According to an Amazon official announcement yesterday, ‘Bloodaxe’ will premiere on January 20. All eight episodes of the first season will be released together on Prime Video and will be available in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

The series is set in 10th-century Norway and follows Erik Bloodaxe, played by Xavier Molyneux, and Gunnhild, played by Jessica Madsen. As they seek control of Norway, they face rival rulers, shifting loyalties and betrayals. The conflict also involves rulers from other Scandinavian kingdoms and a powerful English king.

The cast includes Karlis Arnolds Avots as Egil Skallagrimsson, Levi Miller as Haakon the Good, Rod Hallett as King Athelstan, Alina Tomnikov as Greta and the Seer, Sisse Marie as Queen Thyra, Rune Temte as King Gorm and Jesper Christensen as King Harald Fairhair.

Michael Hirst and his son Horatio Hirst serve as the show’s writers, showrunners and executive producers. Other executive producers include Morgan O’Sullivan, Steve Stark, Arturo Interian, John Weber, Sheila Hockin and Fred Toye. The series is produced by MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios.

Before the first season’s premiere, Prime Video has renewed ‘Bloodaxe’ for a second season. Production on the upcoming season is currently underway in Ireland.
