The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India has suspended the publication of weekly TV ratings after receiving directions from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) under the new TV Ratings Policy 2026.
In an advisory to subscribers, BARC India said it will not release weekly television ratings until it receives formal approval from the ministry. The suspension applies to all TV genres, including entertainment, news, sports, movies, music and regional channels.
According to an Industry sources, the TV Ratings Policy 2026, notified on March 27, requires rating agencies to register and comply with revised governance and operational norms before publishing audience data. BARC India applied within the extended deadline and also prepared to implement the policy’s landing-page exclusion rule. However, the rollout was delayed after the Kerala High Court stayed the relevant provision.
The temporary suspension is expected to impact broadcasters, advertisers and media agencies, as weekly TV ratings play a key role in audience measurement, advertising planning and programme performance. BARC India said ratings will resume once it receives approval from the Ministry under the new policy.
