Independent film distributor Neon has secured the global rights to ‘Artificial’, the much-anticipated feature from acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, weeks after the project parted ways with Amazon MGM Studios.
The acquisition marks a significant development for the film, which centres on one of the most closely watched corporate dramas in the technology industry, a PTI report stated.
Written by former Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich, ‘Artificial’ explores the dramatic events surrounding the temporary removal and subsequent reinstatement of Sam Altman as chief executive of OpenAI in 2023.
The film is expected to delve into the internal power struggle that unfolded at OpenAI, a company at the forefront of artificial intelligence development, and the wider debate over the future direction of AI technology.
The episode attracted global attention after Altman was unexpectedly removed from his position before being reinstated just days later following intense industry and employee pressure.
Actor Andrew Garfield, best known for his performances in ‘The Social Network’ and other acclaimed projects, will portray Altman in the feature. The casting has generated considerable interest given the film’s focus on real-life events that reshaped discussions around artificial intelligence and corporate governance.
Neon plans to position ‘Artificial’ as a major contender during the upcoming awards season. The distributor has built a reputation for successfully backing critically acclaimed films and launching strong awards campaigns, making the acquisition a notable boost for the project’s prospects.
