Warner Bros. brings back iconic ‘HBO’ brand for its streaming service

In a move that blends nostalgia with strategy, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that it is reverting the name of its streaming platform back to ‘HBO Max’, bringing back the iconic branding that once defined premium television. The decision comes just two years after the company had controversially dropped “HBO” in favor of the more generic title, ‘Max’.

According to an AFP report, the company confirmed the rebranding on Wednesday and said the change will roll out this summer. The shift is being viewed as a course correction—an acknowledgment of the value and recognition that the HBO name continues to hold in the entertainment landscape. With critically acclaimed hits like ‘The Last of Us’, ‘Hacks’, ‘Succession’, and the legacy of classics like ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Game of Thrones’, many industry watchers had questioned the 2023 decision to strip away a brand long synonymous with quality storytelling.

“The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming,” said David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery. “Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.”

The streaming platform, originally launched under the HBO Max banner in 2020, had carved a distinct place in the market by catering to audiences who were drawn to prestige content. But in its bid to become a broader player in the global streaming wars, Warner Bros. Discovery had merged Discovery+ content into the platform and opted to go with the simpler ‘Max’. The rebranding, however, seemed to dilute the platform’s premium identity.

Now, with the competition still stiff—thanks to Netflix, Disney+, and others—Warner Bros. is looking to lean back into its most trusted asset: the HBO name. The company said it has added 22 million subscribers over the last two years and now aims to cross 150 million paying users by the end of 2026.

The return to HBO Max is being seen not just as a branding fix but as a signal that Warner is committed to maintaining a high bar for content. For many loyal viewers, it’s a welcome return of a brand they never wanted to see go.
