TRAI to release consultation paper on curated video OTT rules

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will likely publish a consultation paper on rules for OTT video services like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, and JioCinema, according to The Economic Times (ET).

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) is in charge of regulating OTT content. The carriage component is under the control of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). These concerns are being investigated by Trai.

The price parity between OTT video platforms and conventional platforms like cable TV and DTH services is a significant issue that is anticipated to be covered in the consultation paper. Another is the application of some content restrictions for TV on ITT platforms, according to the report.

Currently, broadcasting companies are subject to several regulations, but OTT businesses are not subject to the same restrictions. There are anticipated red lines for content and moderation in the consultation paper.

The consultation process is the first step in formulating rules for a segment making massive losses due to cut-throat competition among over 40 OTT platforms in the country, the ET report stated.

Amazing and grim battle for survival. Guess it will end up in Supreme Court. All that NCLT asked Zee to do was to file a reply to Invesco petition for a EGM. Now this is getting too serious.
