On India’s 80th Independence Day today, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has unveiled Sony VIZHA, a new Tamil general entertainment channel that will launch in October 2026, marking the media company’s entry into Tamil entertainment realm.
According to a SPNI press release, the new channel will focus on stories rooted in Tamil culture, language, emotions and lived realities. Sony VIZHA will feature original fiction, global reality formats, movies and major entertainment programmes across television and digital platforms.
SPNI unveiled the channel’s name and logo on Independence Day through a rendition of ‘Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu’ performed by children.
The name ‘Vizha’ means celebration or festival in Tamil and reflects the channel’s focus on celebrating Tamil stories, talent, music, family, aspirations and popular entertainment.
The channel’s logo features yellow and electric blue. According to SPNI, yellow draws from colours associated with celebrations in Tamil Nadu, including turmeric and marigold, while electric blue gives the brand a fresh, contemporary and premium identity.
Rajaraman Sundaram, SPNI Chief Content Officer South Regional, said Sony VIZHA aims to create premium Tamil stories that feel connected to local audiences while having the scale and quality to reach viewers beyond Tamil Nadu.
The new channel will also draw on SPNI’s experience with popular entertainment franchises such as ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, ‘Indian Idol’, ‘CID’ and ‘Crime Patrol’, while developing its own distinct Tamil identity.
