India’s b’band subs, including M2M cellular mobile, continue to swell

India’s total telephone subscriber base increased to 1,348.08 million at the end of June 2026 after the country added 4.98 million new subscribers during the month, according to telecom subscription data released yesterday by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The total wireless subscriber base, which includes wireless mobile telephone subscribers, M2M cellular mobile connections and fixed wireless access (FWA) subscribers, stood at 1,300.25 million. The wireline subscriber base was 47.82 mn after declining by 0.81 million during June.

TRAI said broadband subscribers, including M2M cellular mobile connections, reached 1,087.50 million. Excluding M2M cellular mobile connections, the broadband subscriber base stood at 1,001.50 million.

 Urban telephone subscribers stood at 792.06 million, while rural telephone subscribers reached 556.01 million. Urban subscribers accounted for 58.76 percent of the total subscriber base, while rural subscribers accounted for 41.24 percent.

India’s overall tele-density with M2M cellular mobile connections stood at 94.31 percent. Urban tele-density was 153.43 percent, while rural tele-density was 60.89 percent . Excluding M2M cellular mobile connections, the country’s tele-density stood at 84.88 percent .

 During June 2026, 14.78 million subscribers submitted requests for mobile number portability. The number of active wireless (mobile) subscribers, based on the peak visitor location register (VLR), stood at 1,201.06 million.
