Prime Video’s latest series ‘The Pyramid Scheme’ has been drawing attention for its realistic portrayal of multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes and the promise of quick success that often attracts unsuspecting individuals. For veteran actor Shekhar Suman, however, the story carries a deeply personal connection.
According to a statement shared by the makers, Suman revealed that he once came dangerously close to becoming involved in a similar scheme, making the show’s subject matter particularly relatable for him.
Reflecting on the experience, the actor recalled being approached by individuals promoting an MLM business model. He admitted that, at the time, he had little understanding of how such schemes operated and was initially persuaded by promises of financial success and social impact.
“I nearly became a part of this scam,” Suman said. “Someone approached me about an MLM, and I had no idea what this whole thing was about. They came with all the big promises, how there’s money involved, how it’s good for society, and I nearly got convinced. But I stopped myself just in the nick of time.”
The actor further explained that his personal interactions with people involved in such schemes helped him understand the persuasive tactics often used to recruit participants. He noted that many of these individuals possess strong communication skills and are adept at influencing opinions, making it easier for people to get drawn into the network.
Having witnessed those methods firsthand, Suman said he immediately connected with the narrative of ‘The Pyramid Scheme’. According to him, the series highlights how easily ordinary people can become attracted to promises of financial freedom and rapid success without fully understanding the risks involved.
He also stressed the importance of raising awareness about such practices, describing it as a broader social responsibility. Suman said stories like ‘The Pyramid Scheme’ can play an important role in encouraging viewers to remain cautious and informed when confronted with similar opportunities.
Produced by The Viral Fever (TVF), ‘The Pyramid Scheme’ has been created by Shreyansh Pandey and directed by Ashish R. Shukla and Shreyansh Pandey. The series is written by Akshendra Mishra and explores the world of pyramid and multi-level marketing schemes through a dramatic and socially relevant lens.
The show examines how persuasive sales pitches, aspirations of wealth and carefully crafted narratives can influence individuals and communities, while also highlighting the consequences that often follow.
Currently streaming exclusively on Prime Video, ‘The Pyramid Scheme’ is available in Hindi for audiences across India and in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
With Shekhar Suman’s personal revelation adding another layer of relevance to the series, the show continues to generate conversations around financial awareness, consumer caution and the growing need to recognise the warning signs of deceptive investment and marketing schemes.
