The Indian government is taking steps to regulate popular communication apps like WhatsApp and Signal. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reached out to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for consultation on this matter. 

This move comes in response to demands from telecom operators who argue that these apps should be subject to the same regulations as the operators themselves. By initiating this consultation, the government aims to address concerns regarding fair competition and level playing field in the communication sector, Economic Times reported.

The outcome of this consultation could potentially lead to new regulations for OTT communication apps in the near future.
